So on January 7th, I uploaded a video onto my Youtube Channel called 'Lapse', and it sparked a lot of things, namely a series of less than two minute videos every Saturday which I have called ‘The Series’, or ‘The Film Series’, in that if played back-to-back, it could almost be like a film. Now this sparked a number of curiosity amongst my subs in regards to what this is about, this is a chance to give some clarity about what is happening.
Where did the idea come from?
It was started by an improvised video on the Saturday it was uploaded. I wanted to upload a video that week and couldn’t think of anything. But the first thing that sparked was trying out camera techniques and angles with just one person while providing something interesting. After editing, I decided I would continue to do this every Saturday because it can help me develop these skills while telling a story.
Is this all planned out and scripted?
No it isn’t. In fact all of the dialogue you ever hear in each part is all improvised after editing the video. Each part ends at a point to give me an idea of where the next video is going to go, I have certain aspects about the next part planning in my head and I’ll try and think it out in what I want the part to be about whilst thinking about how the sequence will play out visually. I will then spend a day filming it, edit the video and if everything fits in place, I then record the dialogue and upload it once it’s rendered. Some of the parts have only even come together on the Saturday it goes up, an example being the latest part 'The Last Dream' was filmed instead of what I had planned because I couldn’t practically do the part I had in mind originally.
How long will ‘The Series’ last?
As long as my imagination keeps going, but the plan is to hopefully keep the series going until after Vidcon at the latest.
Does that mean it will end?
The current story will, but there might be more out of this at a future point with new characters and a new arc.
Will there be more characters?
Yes, more characters should be coming soon and the world will expand out from there, it’s all down to availability of the people who will play them.
Filming with just me is one, it plays a problem with filming in public as I fear someone will nick the camera if I do a scene where I’m around the corner, not to mention it limits getting certain camera angles. The other is the worry attracted unwanted attention while filming in public. Given I am normally a person who doesn’t care about what people think about me, I still suffer a fear of being watched while making videos when filming solo.
What are your goals out of this?
It’s about pushing my imagination to the limit and showing that an idea can come together if you just put your mind to it. A lot of my videos are improvised from an idea, but I wanted to show how doing a series that is like a ‘choose your own adventure’ with the choices being made in advanced makes a good challenge in story telling. I also want to enjoy the act of film making as my vlog videos are limited as I will mainly film against the wall, this allows me to be completely creative and free to create something with all aspects like camera angles and editing being free to choose. It also provides a great lesson in learning to improve in video making that will benefit the channel as a whole but also my enjoyment of video making.
'The Series' is uploaded every Saturday with each part consisting between one and two minutes long. To see all the current parts and see latest videos, the playlist can be found here.

I’ve started a blog for people who’ve finished my new book The Fault in Our Stars. It’s a place where I can answer (some of) your questions and hopefully if I figure out comments you can participate in the discussion. I don’t even know if this will work, but I’m hopeful?
